Perform and analyze basic and advanced clinical laboratory tests within scope of licensure associated with the preparation of specimens for the anatomical study of their microscopic structure in support of the hospital's mission of patient care. Provide input for the development of quality assurance and quality control procedures. Assist in planning, development, and implementation of new test procedures. Act as the subject matter expert.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education, Certification, and/or Licensure:

1. Bachelor's Degree in Histotechnology or related field.

2. Histotechnologist Certification (HT) through American Society for Clinical Pathologists (ASCP).

Experience: 1. Three (3) years of experience as a Histotechnologist.

1. Perform basic and advanced laboratory procedures (e.g., but not limited to, specimen accessioning and processing, inventory, ordering, embedding, tissue cutting and staining, frozen section production, special stains, immunohistochemistry, etc.).

2. Provide input into the development of standard operating policies and procedures (SOP) and follow those procedures to produce accurate reproducible results.

3. Assist in the planning, development, evaluation, and implementation of new test procedures.

4. Act as the subject matter expert and as a resource for laboratory personnel. Provide training as needed.

5. Prepare tissue and produce microscopic slides using a wide variety of tissue techniques (i.e., fixation, embedding, sectioning and standard staining) to produce accurate reproducible results to meet the needs of patients as requested by the physicians.

6. Operate basic and advanced laboratory equipment/instruments (e.g., cryostats, tissue processors, microtomes, knife sharpeners, slide stainers, embedding centers, distillation system, pH meters, special stain units, IHC instrumentation) consistent with manufacturers' instruction manuals, and with laboratory SOP. Recognizes errors, problems and utilize expertise to perform minor and major troubleshooting and appropriate problem resolution.

7. Record all work, (e.g., blocks cut, special stains, slides, immunoperoxidase slides, frozen section slides, immunofluorescent slides, re-cut slides, autopsy and surgical slides, decals, conference, teaching and research), according to SOP. Complete all quality control documentation and records legibly and accurately (e.g., review of records, daily worksheets), according to SOP.

8. Maintain effective communication with laboratory sections, other hospital departments and public, as necessary to assure dissemination of information and the identification/resolution of problems.

9. Participate in the educational endeavors of the institution to meet the current and future needs of the department. Participate as required, in the education of medical students, residents, PA students, School of Medicine students, MLS and Histotechnology students and technicians.

10. Participate in planning and implementing change and maintaining and improving productivity through attendance and participation in tech meetings, projects, and discussions with supervisor.

Additional Job Description:

As the Senior Histotechnologist, this candidate will play a key leadership role in supporting the histology staff and ensuring smooth communication around workflow changes. They will help implement new processes and serve as a resource within the laboratory to assist with daily operations. Working in close coordination with the laboratory supervisor(s), they will help manage the workload and maintain efficiency across the histology lab. This individual will also assist in creating and maintaining the staff schedule, while serving as a liaison to elevate concerns and challenges to upper management. In addition to routine technical duties, the Senior Histotechnologist will contribute to process improvement initiatives, provide operational feedback through reporting, and help foster a collaborative and solutions-oriented environment.
