Practice Lead II, Software Engineering (US)

The Practice Lead II, Software Engineering (US) is accountable for building, maintaining and evolving the culture and community of Software Engineering Practitioners. The role oversees a team of Software Engineers and is responsible for coaching on knowledge, skills and performance, building and evolving the practice's capabilities, and advising practitioners on their work to ensure solutions are sound.

Depth & Scope:

  • Provides people management leadership by hiring the best talent, setting goals, developing staff, managing employee performance and compensation decisions, promoting teamwork and handling any/all disciplinary actions, as required
  • Recognized as an expert in their field whose focus is on the coaching and training of practitioners
  • People leader with expert knowledge of disciplines and practices in field of expertise
  • Deep expertise and knowledge of specific domain or broad range of TD frameworks, technology, tools, best practices, processes and procedures, as well as broader organization issues
  • Proven ability in soft skills people management of large teams
  • Provide guidance on the work of practitioners as related to the quality of product(s)/work being produced, delivered & speed of delivery / to market
  • Ability to develop colleagues to be masters of their craft in the market around us
  • Quickly adapts to customer, stakeholder and regulatory needs in collaboration with Platform and Journey teams
  • Experienced in the continuous assessment of SE Practitioners and their craft to ensure enterprise practice standards are upheld.
  • Facilitates and Fosters Practice Community of Interest and use of this practice across the Technology organization
  • Contributes to the development of coaching strategies for individuals within their area of expertise
  • Provides leadership and guidance to several teams and solves cross-department issues
  • Participates in the development of business and practice strategies
  • Expert collaborator and is known for bringing diverse teams together to achieve a common goal

Education & Experience:

  • University or Graduate / post graduate degree in Computer Science or related Engineering discipline; or equivalent practical experience
  • 10+ years of relevant experience in field of specialization (pending job level review)

Customer Accountabilities:

  • Acts as an expert or lead innovator and culture change agent for the practice amongst Business, Journey, and Platform leaders
  • Builds and leads an engaged culture of Practitioners that inspires pride and meaningful work
  • Is accountable for coaching the team of practitioners' knowledge, skills and performance, building and evolving the practice's capabilities, and advising practitioners on their work to ensure solutions are sound
  • Focus is on the development of the Practice's talent, coaching and training their direct reporting Practitioners and contributes to the development strategies for the Practice's people
  • Is accountable to directly lead team of highly skilled Practitioners in an area of expertise without getting involved in day-to-day activities, providing quality assurance on the application of methods and practices owned within the Journeys and Platforms
  • Executes on Practice strategy as it relates to introducing tools, methodologies and processes across the enterprise
  • Provides overall team leadership, training, coaching, development, succession, recruitment and resource management, and ensures on-going performance feedback and assessments occur and development plans exist for each team member
  • Engages team with Platform and Journey leads to ensure 2-way feedback of Practitioners occurs
  • Is accountable to understand the current skills and capabilities within their practice, actively working to close gaps that may exist through additional learning, coaching, supports etc.
  • Is accountable for hiring the best talent, growing these colleagues and managing retention

Shareholder Accountabilities:

  • Ensures team adheres to enterprise frameworks and methodologies related to overall business management activities
  • Supports team in staying knowledgeable on emerging issues, engineering trends and evolving regulatory requirements and assess potential impacts to the Bank
  • Ensures programs, policies and practices meet business needs and complies with internal and external requirements
  • Ensures programs/initiatives related to own area of expertise are well managed and administered and ensures the prompt and thorough resolution of issues
  • Monitors assigned functional area for productivity and efficiency, operating systems to continually improve delivery capability
  • May develop and/or contribute to negotiations of third-party contracts/agreements
  • Proactively identifies key business opportunities, researches and recommends enhancements / modifications, develop strategies to achieve recommendations and works closely with team to execute and implement
  • Contributes to the continuous enhancement of knowledge / expertise in own area and keeps current with emerging industry trends, new technologies and best practices in the external market that can contribute to delivering effective customer solutions
  • Monitors and communicates the effectiveness of strategies, programs, and practices related to own area of expertise
  • Leads or contributes to cross-functional / enterprise initiatives as an organizational or subject matter expert helping to identify risk / provide guidance for significant and complex situations
  • Manages intake and demand, coordinating resources as required and identifies and sources appropriate resources across all work streams, ensuring all resources are used effectively
  • Keeps abreast of emerging issues, trends, and evolving regulatory requirements and assesses potential impacts
  • Ensures employees are knowledgeable and assumes responsibility to minimize operational and regulatory risk by complying with Bank and industry Code of Conduct
  • Protects the interests of the organization; identifies and manages risks, and escalates non-standard, high risk transactions / activities as necessary
  • Maintains a culture of risk management and control, supported by effective processes in alignment with risk appetite

  • Manages employees in compliance with all human resources policies, procedures and guidelines of conduct

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Strong experience using Java, RPA, Testing and API
  • Strong People Management experience
  • Project/ Program Management experience
  • Hands on Process improvement experience
