Registered Nurse - Labor and Delivery

Position Summary:
The Labor and Delivery RN provides comprehensive, patient-centered care to women during labor, delivery, and the immediate postpartum period. This role adheres to the AWHONN standards for perinatal nursing practice, ensuring safe nurse-to-patient ratios, evidence-based care, and optimal outcomes for mothers and newborns.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
- Provide continuous assessment, planning, intervention, and evaluation of care for laboring patients.
- Monitor fetal heart tones and maternal vital signs using electronic fetal monitoring and clinical judgment.
- Administer medications, including epidurals and oxytocin, and manage IV therapy.
- Assist with vaginal deliveries, cesarean sections, and emergency obstetric procedures.
- Provide emotional support and education to patients and families throughout the childbirth experience.
- Collaborate with obstetricians, midwives, anesthesiologists, and pediatric teams.
- Maintain accurate and timely documentation in the electronic medical record (EMR).
- Participate in emergency response situations such as postpartum hemorrhage, shoulder dystocia, and neonatal resuscitation.
- Adhere to AWHONN-recommended nurse-to-patient ratios (e.g., 1:1 for active labor, 1:2 for postpartum couplets).
- Follow unit-specific protocols, including contingency staffing and acuity-based assignments.
Qualifications:
- Current RN license in the state of practice.
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred.
- Minimum of 1 year of experience in labor and delivery or perinatal nursing.
- Certification in Inpatient Obstetric Nursing (RNC-OB) preferred.
- Current BLS, ACLS, and NRP certifications.
- Proficiency in fetal monitoring interpretation (AWHONN Intermediate or Advanced Fetal Monitoring course preferred).
- Other skills and competence:
- Strong clinical assessment and critical thinking skills.
- Ability to remain calm and effective in high-stress, emergent situations.
- Compassionate communication and patient advocacy.
- Team-oriented with a commitment to interdisciplinary collaboration.
- Familiarity with AWHONN staffing standards and perinatal safety bundles
