LHH is seeking a highly skilled and credentialed Hospital Outpatient Coder I to join our team remotely. This contract-to-hire opportunity is ideal for professionals with a strong background in health information management, coding accuracy, and regulatory compliance. You'll play a key role in ensuring the integrity of patient data and supporting clinical documentation improvement.

About the Role
LHH is seeking a highly skilled and credentialed Hospital Outpatient Coder I to join our team remotely. This contract-to-hire opportunity is ideal for professionals with a strong background in health information management, coding accuracy, and regulatory compliance. You'll play a key role in ensuring the integrity of patient data and supporting clinical documentation improvement.
Key Responsibilities
- Review and analyze outpatient medical records to identify and assign accurate ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS Level II codes
- Abstract and verify all relevant medical data to complete data entry for outpatient encounters
- Ensure coding practices comply with CMS, AHA Coding Clinic, OSHPD, and organizational guidelines
- Collaborate with physicians to clarify diagnoses, procedures, and sequencing to ensure accurate documentation
- Select appropriate DRGs for inpatient cases and resolve discrepancies with fiscal intermediaries
- Maintain productivity and quality standards, including a minimum 95% compliance rate
- Participate in documentation audits and support physician compliance with regulatory requirements
- Enter patient information into electronic health record systems, ensuring data accuracy and integrity
- Maintain confidentiality and security of patient records in accordance with HIPAA and organizational policies
- Serve as a resource for other departments regarding coding questions and issues
- Support corporate compliance by reporting observed fraud or abuse and adhering to all applicable laws and policies
- Required Certifications: CCS or CPC
- Education:
- High school diploma or GED
- Completion of accredited coursework in medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, ICD-10, and CPT coding conventions
- High school diploma or GED
- Experience:
- Minimum 2 years of continuous hospital coding/abstracting experience within the last 5 years
- At least 1 year of full-time coding experience with certification
- Minimum 2 years of continuous hospital coding/abstracting experience within the last 5 years
- Technical Skills:
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word)
- Experience with EPIC or similar EHR systems preferred
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word)
- Additional Requirements:
- Must attain a minimum score of 75% on the employer's coding test
- Must maintain current coding credentials and complete at least 10 CE units annually
- Ability to sit for extended periods and manage deadlines in a fast-paced environment
- Strong analytical, critical thinking, and communication skills
- Must attain a minimum score of 75% on the employer's coding test
- Must reside in Hawaii, Washington, California, or Oregon
- Must have a secure, HIPAA-compliant home office setup and reliable internet connection
