Full Stack Architect

The Full Stack Architect designs, describes, and manages solution engineering in relation to capabilities of assigned Journeys and Platforms through the end-to-end lifecycle (i.e., frontend, backend, database and debugging of applications or sites). This role also uses knowledge of business acumen and technical expertise to play a lead role in shaping the technical vision to create complex distributed solutions, technical designs, and integrations.

Depth & Scope:

  • Seasoned individual contributor role with expert knowledge of specific enterprise and/or functional domain(s) and a demonstrated track record working with a broad range of architecture frameworks, technology, tools, processes and procedures
  • Exceptional collaboration, communication and client-facing skills
  • Big-picture thinker, with ability to anticipate architectural gaps and identify emerging trends through both advanced business acumen and highly specialized technical knowledge of TD and its applications, programming languages, industry best practices, Bank standards, infrastructure and architectural design / solutions
  • Architect assigned to work autonomously on high profile, complex and/or high-risk technology projects with significant impact to the organization

Education & Experience:

  • Undergraduate degree or Technical Certificate (Graduate degree preferred)
  • 10+ years relevant experience developing a variety of platforms
  • Experience with Continuous Integration, Continuous Delivery, Pair programming and/or Test-Driven Development is an asset (i.e., ability to author Unit, Integration and Functional Tests)
  • Demonstrated experience with leading technical tools integration in a complex environment

Preferred Qualifications:

  • This is a Full Stack Architect role. NOT a Full Stack Developer position
  • Design the solution architecture end-to-end, following enterprise architecture guidelines, and lead on project architecture blueprints and design specifications.
  • Lead the overall technical vision to create complex distributed solutions.
  • Provide strategic guidance to ensure technology teams and business areas understand architectural options and technology choices, considering total cost of ownership.
  • Establish a common language and visualizations for designs.
  • Advise on foundational solution patterns, principles, and constraints across the product-based organization that align to the overall enterprise technology strategy, roadmap, and architectural goals.
  • Play a key role in aligning internal and external stakeholders on the architecture/infrastructure aspect of product strategy and delivery roadmap. Communicate with and actively engage with the Executive Product Owner in achieving the strategy.
  • Lead on architecture backlog prioritization activities, advising on business/technology trade-offs.
  • Review, approve, or veto blueprints relative to enterprise standards and advise on how best to design overall solutions.
  • Identify, recommend, source, negotiate, and implement emerging end-to-end IT trends, developments, and improvements/solutions (buy/build/reuse) through leadership of projects.
  • Adhere to enterprise frameworks or methodologies for area activities.
  • Ensure projects are compliant with technology domain architecture and design/operate processes to provide ongoing review of in-progress activity against standards.
  • Protect/enhance the security, availability of technology, brand integrity, and shareholder value by establishing parameters for continued investment in technology solutions and providing technical risk analysis/assessment.
  • Identify enhancements and gaps in architectural frameworks, standards, and patterns for future versions.
  • Focus on reliability, scalability, and the development of architectural infrastructure, including highly complex and scalable systems.
  • Develop observability standards to ensure production systems operate under known conditions and transparently provide these measurements to anticipate errors or failures.
  • Lead or contribute to cross-functional/enterprise initiatives as an organizational or subject matter expert, helping to identify risk/provide guidance for significant and complex situations.
  • Collaborate broadly with lead Architect and other practitioners, including marketing teams and engineers, to ensure the right features for products/projects and applications.
  • Mentor and train junior colleagues, actively driving capability creation and upskilling within the practice.
  • Participate fully as a member of the team, support a positive work environment, and ensure timely communication of issues/points of interest.
  • Provide thought leadership and/or industry knowledge for quality engineering best practices and participate in knowledge transfer within the team and business unit.
  • Participate in personal performance management and development activities, including cross-training within the team.

  • This role is specific to building out and supporting technology architecture for our US Stores (branches). Previous domain experience from other Financial Institutions is a huge plus.

Customer Accountabilities:

  • Applies a multi-disciplined expertise with database, application, client tiers, layering of software, build, test and deploy strategies in order to create the overall design of software (including applications, infrastructure, middleware) and guide how the sub-components are developed by different teams
  • Elevates focus on applications and data as differentiators for the customer experience, anchored in sound foundational elements of Infrastructure and Platforms
  • Advises on suitability of technology stacks to define principles / key constraints for solution components; rallies the team around these principles to determine security / scalability approach, and impact assessments for future design
  • Drives continual upgrading and grounds the team in assessing practical program concerns to innovate on both server-side and user-side features as technologies / platforms expand to reduce technology debt and build resilient solutions
  • Leads code reviews to create and test prototypes to assess viability of approaches. Uses configuration management and integration / build automation tools to lead and deploy code, gather proof points for developers to build on, navigate around complexities based on a clear understanding of the vision across the technology stacks and provide critical suggestions for fixes and improvements on the integration
  • Monitors and reports on progress and collaborates broadly with other practitioners, including designers, engineers, and other applicable business stakeholders to ensure the necessary features for the products and applications are developed within assigned portfolio
  • Designs tests that will be implemented to keep the software functional; supports issue analysis and fix activities during test phases, as well as production issue resolution
  • Collaborates with Practices, actively driving capability creation; mentoring and training junior colleagues to be adaptive, staying on top of expanding technologies and engineering trends and creating highly visual and functional solutions

Shareholder Accountabilities:

  • Sets service-level objectives (SLO) and exercise key decision rights of the FSA role
  • Focuses on reliability, scalability, and the development of the architectural infrastructure; including highly complex and scalable systems
  • Develops observability standards to ensure that production systems operate under known conditions and transparently provides these measurements to anticipate when errors or failures can arise.
  • Leads interaction with governance and control groups, (e.g. regulatory / operational risk, compliance and audit) to provide subject matter expertise and consult on risk issues related to architectural technology and tools
  • Leads or contributes to cross-functional / enterprise initiatives as an organizational or subject matter expert helping to identify risk / provide guidance for significant and complex situations
  • Monitors and reports on the status of the products / projects and applications within assigned product, ensuring projects are compliant with technology domain architecture, and designs / operates processes to provide ongoing review of in-progress activity against technology architecture and development standards
  • Foresees architectural issues / gaps and identifies emerging industry trends to recommend value-added architectural improvements that will alleviate technology debt and build resilient solutions
  • Maps processes and sub-processes that bridge the gap between business problems and technology solutions
  • Keeps track of changes made to code through control systems
  • Collaborates within practices, platforms or journeys comprised of diverse and complementary skills; inspiring the team to embrace changes and continually advance collective knowledge of technical tools / trends
  • Protects the interests of the organization identify and manage risks, and escalate non-standard, high risk activities as necessary
  • Keeps abreast of emerging issues, trends, and evolving regulatory requirements and assess potential impacts
  • Maintains a culture of risk management and control, supported by effective processes
