POSITION SUMMARY: The Auditing Specialist (Coding) is responsible for performing clinical reviews of medical records and other documentation to evaluate issues of coding accuracy and clinical appropriateness of documented diagnosis. The Auditing Specialist (Coding) conducts quality reviews on coding staff documentation; conducts ongoing and retrospective chart audits to identify charges and billing weaknesses, possible coding, documentation, or compliance issues reports discrepancies to the appropriate departments and makes recommendations to minimize their reoccurrence. The position helps the company evaluate operating guidelines, controls, procedures, and reports identified problems to management. The position ensures that internal procedures correspond with corporate policies, grantor standards, contract deliverables, and regulatory requirements (federal, state, and country)
JOB ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
- Perform audits, including, operational, clinical, and compliance reviews across the organizational system
- Conducts audits for appropriate clinical documentation
- Billing Audits - Remittance Denial reviews
- Medicare/Medicaid Audit - ACHA request
- Provider Encounter audits behavioral health
- Patient Service audits - registration, encounter, cash, insurance verification, etc.
- Conducts audits based on an established schedule, which can be monthly, quarterly, or a date determined by the funder or grantor
- Prepares internal audit reports detailing the results of the reviews and recommendations.
- Provides reports to appropriate on-site staff and leadership
- Experience with current computer technology which includes, but is not limited to, Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint
- Experience with Electronic Medical Records, Report writing, Practice Management systems
- Strong writing skills and must be able to write clear, comprehensive, detailed but simplified reports
- Must be able to communicate orally in a way that reduces the possibility of misunderstanding the message
- Must have critical/strategic thinking skills and be able to prioritize work schedule with
- requests requiring immediate attention
- Must have strong customer service skills and be able to identify internal and external customers
- Must have excellent time management skills and be able to meet deadlines, work under pressure, and prioritize work schedule
- Ability to multi-task and work efficiently under stress
- Ability to maintain confidence
- Must have a valid license and transportation
- Associate degree or equivalent relevant experience required (RN, LPN, or Coding
- Credential - RHIT / RHIA)
- Bachelor's Degree in a healthcare-related field with a minimum of five (5) years of experience in medical coding preferred
- Prior chart auditing and coding experience
- Well-versed in outpatient and inpatient coding and reimbursement guidelines
- Experience in Microsoft Office with specific emphasis on Excel spreadsheets
- Experience with internal auditing standards, techniques, and sampling procedures
- Able to work independently and as part of a team
- Periodic travel is required
- Must have a valid license and reliable transportation. Audits may be conducted at any site
- within the company, or a location chosen by the grantor or payor
- May occasionally have irregular, adjusted, or extended work schedule, including evenings and weekends
