How you'll make an impact
  • Applies theoretical and practical knowledge of human resources subject matter to perform routine professional level analytical and consultative work in classification, compensation, and a variety of human resources competency areas.
  • Learns to inform assigned project manager of issues and asks relevant questions; anticipates project needs and contributes to the overall quality of project deliverables; learns to convey recommendations with confidence and in a defensible manner.
  • Conducts research and statistical analyses; gathers complete and accurate information through questioning and by checking multiple sources; seeks the perspectives of knowledgeable persons and those involved in an area of subject matter expertise.
  • Assists with compiling, organizing, analyzing, and interpreting data for projects and reports; utilizes findings to formulate defensible recommendations related to assigned tasks conveying a command of the relevant facts and information.
  • Prepares high quality deliverables such as class descriptions and data spreadsheets that are relevant, concise, consistent, thorough, and adhere to established standards.
  • Learns to make systematic comparisons of two or more alternatives; notices discrepancies and inconsistencies in available information.
  • Ensures work products/client deliverables are well-organized, thorough, accurate, complete, and in a client ready format.
  • Plans, organizes, and prioritizes own workload; coordinates project activities with others.
  • Communicates with internal and external clients to provide information, project status, or other routine information requiring some interpretation, as assigned.
  • Learns about project lifecycle including project scope, project timetables, project budgets and timeline; learns to work with in assigned project parameters.
  • Performs related duties as required.
About You

Knowledge of:

  • Basic principles and practices of human resources with a concentration in classification and compensation.
  • Basic principles, practices, and techniques of human resources consulting.
  • Professional guidelines, standards, and principles applicable to assigned projects.
  • Research methodology and statistical methods, analyses, and concepts.
  • Applicable federal, state, and local laws, codes, and regulations as well as industry standards and best practices pertinent to the assigned area of responsibility.
  • Techniques for providing a high level of customer service, by effectively dealing with the public, vendors, contractors, and staff.
  • The structure and content of the English language, including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar.
  • Modern equipment and communication tools used for business functions and program, project, and task coordination, including computers and software programs relevant to work performed.

Ability to:

  • Learn to compile, interpret, and apply qualitative and quantitative data; learn to identify obstacles and problems; recommend and implement sound decisions.
  • Demonstrate a basic understanding of a variety of public sector services and gains basic understanding of the public sector job families and industries that perform those services.
  • Learn to conduct consulting projects.
  • Work independently and as part of a team; independently prioritize, plan, organize, and complete work assignments.
  • Be accountable, take responsibility for mistakes, and accept feedback.
  • Work accurately and effectively amid multiple priorities and deadlines to achieve goals.
  • Work closely with the project manager to make the projects successful.
  • Respond to change positively; adapt work methods or learn and implement new work methods or procedures; adapt to changes in assignments and priorities.

  • Effectively represent the Practice Area in meetings with governmental agencies; community groups; various business, professional, and other outside organizations; and in meetings with individuals.
  • Prepare clear and concise reports, correspondence, documentation, and other written materials.
  • Use tact, initiative, prudence, and independent judgment within general policy, procedural, and legal guidelines.
  • Independently organize work, set priorities, meet critical deadlines, and follow-up on assignments.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing, using appropriate English grammar and syntax.
  • Establish, maintain, and foster positive and effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  • Effectively use computer systems, software applications relevant to work performed, and modern business equipment to perform a variety of work tasks.

Education and Experience:

  • Three (3) years of professional level analytical and/or consultative experience in support of human resources functions, with a concentration in classification and/or compensation.

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Some positions may require possession of a valid California Driver’s License, a satisfactory driving record, and a properly registered and insured vehicle, to be maintained throughout employment.

Physical Demands:

Must possess mobility to work in a standard office setting and use standard office equipment, including a computer; to operate a motor vehicle and visit various client sites; vision to read printed materials and a computer screen; and hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone. This is primarily a sedentary office classification although standing in work areas and walking between work areas may be required. Finger dexterity is needed to access, enter, and retrieve data using a computer keyboard or calculator and to operate standard office equipment. Positions in this classification occasionally bend, stoop, kneel, reach, push, and pull drawers open and closed to retrieve and file information. Employees must possess the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull materials and objects up to 10 pounds.

Environmental Demands:

Employees work in an office environment with moderate noise levels, controlled temperature conditions, and no direct exposure to hazardous physical substances. Employees may interact with upset staff and/or public and private representatives in interpreting and enforcing Practice Area policies and procedures.
