A Maintenance Of Traffic Laborer performs many duties involving traffic control to assist crew when paving roads and highways directing motorists and flags traffic as needed. Under the direction of the traffic control foreman.

Listed below is the minimum requirement for this job:

1. Stand for periods of time and flag traffic in order to direct motorists through the construction workzone. Use of a STOP/SLOW paddle or orange flag is required.

Other Duties and Responsibilities

This position can include the set-up and maintenance of traffic control devices based on the specific demands of the traffic control plan for the job.

1. Walk along beside slow moving equipment and flag traffic using a hand held flag.
2. Flag traffic while standing, using both hands for a STOP/SLOW paddle and a two way radio. May be exposed to weather extremes (i.e. heat, rain, wind, etc.)
3. Monitor lane closures for knocked over cones while walking. Must upright or move cones as needed.
4. Monitor lane closures for knocked over barricades or portable signs. Ability to upright these items. Weight to upright 10-20 lbs. Requires walking, bending and lifting.
5. Placement or removal of plastic traffic cones - weight 10-12 lbs. This is done by sitting in a slow moving vehicle while placing or picking up cones on the roadway. Can require dynamic lifting actions due to picking items up while vehicle is moving slowly.
6. Placement or removal of barricades/signs weight 25-50 lbs. The worker lifts these items from the back of a pick-up truck or trailer and stands them up near the roadway.
7. Climb into or out of the back of a pick-up truck or traffic control trailer. Requires stepping up on the bumper of the truck or trailer, steadying yourself with one hand, and stepping over the side of the truck bed or trailer. Exits the vehicle by reversing the steps above.
8. Check with dump truck operators who come on site to receive a copy of the load ticket and provide directions to dump areas.

Traffic control or Maintenance Of Traffic (MOT) as it is referred, contains a variety of duties and responsibilities. Of the tasks listed above, many can stand alone and be performed for a 10 hour shift. Various combinations of these tasks can be performed, or eliminated, based on the physical limitations of the employee, if any. All requirements are subject to modification to reasonably accommodate individuals with a disability.
