Off-Site Anesthesia Nursing Team (Non-Operating Room Anesthesia / NORA)

Type of Area: Perianesthesia nurses who accompany anesthesia teams that provide services in Non-OR locations including ECCCC and 1st floor Medical Center Radiology

Location: University Medical Center Emily Couric Clinical Cancer Center (ECCCC)

Hours of Operation: Monday-Friday 0700-1700 except for holidays when the Main OR is closed to elective cases.

Scope/Complexity of Client/Patient Care Services:

Population: Patient population served ranges from neonate to geriatric. Acuity ranges from outpatient to acute care. Offsite nurses assist anesthesia team with care provision to IMU/ICU patients but all care is directly supervised by Anesthesia Attending. Offsite nursing team practices only within scope of Perianesthesia Main unit competencies. Handoff of Care between IMU/ICU RN and Anesthesia Attending is required.

Services: This team provides perianesthesia care to patients scheduled for procedures with anesthesia in the Medical Center 1st floor Radiology department and ECCCC. Post anesthesia care including same day discharge may be completed in the procedural area or in the 2nd floor Perianesthesia Main unit. IMU patients will complete Phase 1 recovery in Perianesthesia Main.

Admission/Discharge Criteria:

Admission: Admission to the service is designated by the anesthesiologist. Staff competency guidelines dictate nursing practice for all patients. Generally all outpatient or acute care procedural patients receiving any type of anesthesia in the above mentioned locations would qualify for this service.

Discharge: Discharge criteria includes a written order by the anesthesiologist documented via note in Epic.

Patient Population Specific Competencies and Considerations: Annual unit-based competencies are dependent upon trends identified through quality reporting and/or introduction of changes in equipment practices and/or institutional/departmental policies and procedures.

The staff in PeriAnesthesia Main is composed of registered nurses patient care technicians/assistants health unit coordinators and patient services assistants. A registered nurse with appropriate competencies for charge is present at all times to provide direct care and supervise the rest of the staff. Two licensed staff members one of whom must be a RN competent in Phase 1 post anesthesia care are present whenever a patient is recovering in Phase 1. During holidays and to augment night and weekend staff a call system is implemented to ensure adequate staffing. If the need arises additional staff may be obtained by utilizing wage part-time and incentive. The staffing plan is in a constant state of assessment and evaluation as the scheduled day progresses and as needs arise.

Capable clinician focused on expanding knowledge and skills. Consistently provides effective direct care as part of the interdisciplinary team to a variety of complex patients. Manages care and implements treatment plans at a refined skill level in collaboration with patients their families physicians and other members of the health care team. Seeks as well as provides feedback for improved clinical practice. Assumes a beginning leadership role but seeks mentoring in this process.

Position Compensation Range: 39.90 - 53.00 Hourly

Minimum Requirements:

Education: Graduate of an accredited nursing program required. Bachelor of Science in Nursing required within 5 years of hire.

Experience: 1 year of relevant experience.

Licensure: Licensed to Practice as a Registered Nurse in the Commonwealth of Virginia. American Heart Association (AHA) Health Care Provider BLS certification required.
